My guess is that I would be happiest working on various assignments/projects designing logos/posters/covers with heavy emphasis on illustration. I'd also sell and exhibit my photography on the side, but I am not sure how much overlap there could be between that and graphic design.
Some projects may require work in a collective - with the unique benefit of learning various aspects of the craft from others. But some are best churned out in the quiet of one's studio. I love working with people, so some combination of the two modes would be great.
